family

MMMMMM
Grandfamily is a recently coined term that refers to a family where grandparents, great-grandparents, other relatives, or close family friends are raising a child because the biological parents are unwilling or unable to do so. Legal custody of a child may or may not be involved, and the child may be related by blood, marriage or adoption. This arrangement is also known as "kinship care", "kincare" or "relative care". Kinship placement may reduce the number of home placements children experience, allow children to maintain connections to communities, schools and family members, increase the likelihood of eventual reunification with birth parents, is less costly to taxpayers than formal foster care and keeps many children out of the foster care system.

There are currently 6,706,706 children in the United States who are living in grandfamilies.[1] Of these, 2.4 million children are being raised solely by their grandparents with no parents present.[1] Between 2000 and 2005, the number of children raised by relatives in the U.S. has increased by more than 222,000,[1] and 460,000 grandparents nationally are raising children below the federal poverty level.[1] Relatives care for 23.5% of all children in foster care in the United States.[2]

December topic

Bev and I were talking and hope Jan agrees, our December topic will become December/January topic. It just might make life a bit easier (for all). And the topic is.... Up to Jan to announce!!!

My Mandala

Sorry it is a day late. (My computer wizz went on strike and didn't have the patience to work out what was wrong!! Yep he is male!!!) But here it is.

I had lots of ideas but it is hard to put those ideas onto a small quilt. It was an interesting topic and again makes you look into things and at things that you probably wouldn't normally. Hope you like it goirls.

Mandala 2

And while I had the paints out ...I decided to try printing...do you recall when we were kids folding paper circles and cutting out shapes and then opening out to have pretty designs...
Anyway I tried that for fun and ended up with a strangish piece so I made it into this! A Bev version of Indian Mandalas or dreamcatchers?Cheers

Mandala

Here is mine. The colours arent what I envisioned but where to represent the ocean. And I like stars and glitter!I wanted to try painting fabric and then saw a quilt show on TV and decided to try the embellishing ideas from that.If there was more free time in my world I would like to redo mine using more purply tone with way less contrasts but thats for the future....maybe.

well Done

Another great set of quilts.....all different and all interesting.I especially love that music quilt Jan.
Once again our quilts are so good. LOL . And they are all so different.
I got another quilting book from the library and the quilters in it do a quilt each month about what is going on in their lives at that time. They are no bigger than an A4 piece of paper. It is so interesting. But I am getting worried that someone at the library can read my mind!!!!!

And lucky last is.....Music!
Thinking about the word music made me realise for me music and emotions go together.
All music makes you feel some sort of emotion and often a song is tied up with memories which evokes an emotion of some sort!!!

Not doing this terribly well but here is my history quilt.
I was given the hexagons by a lady whose mother shifted into our rest home, as she died recently I thought the word history is appropriate!!
I hand sewed them together just like in the good old days!

I'm baaack!!!

I'm back finally with three quilts to load on, I've finally caught up!!!

I've been working this weekend so haven't had time to scratch myself let alone get my photos on here and I'm hoping I can remember how to do it.

These aren't in the right order but this is my memories, I'm like Linda and have gone with memories of a patchwork teacher. My wonderful teacher up in Kaitaia used old doilies to make a quilt and I always loved it and I always associate her with it and there is a little of Linda on here to mention her influence or maybe encouragement is a better word. I will let Linda find the part that represents her!!

My memories

.
My quilt is really simple - what I started off with all those years ago in Hobart. It was the first block we did at night classes and it brought back lots of memories of that class and that time in my life. Really loved those classes and all the handwork, which seemed so much in the first few weeks and then it became a breeze. Still love hand work. Joy was such a great teacher.

Next month

I have agonized over this word....Its a bit different than what we have been doing....If you dont approve I can select another!

The word is Mandala....good luck all!

Memories

Well here is my offering....not overly artistic but it did mean a hunt thro some old photos leading to some nice memories for me.Christmas is often a part of my happy memories so I went with that. Also I framed it so it looks like a photo...the obvious source of reviving memories. The five photos are Xmas at my brothers place possibly the last when we were all together,my parents ,Greg and I with our two children on holiday in HongKong,a santa photo of my kids from long ago and a photo of the three grandchildren on the way to Xmas assembly last year.

Cant wait to see yours! And I hope someone worked out how to represent smells which I have now realised evoch almost as many memories as photos do...at least for me!

Revealing

Yes you do have to midnight - I don't have to sit up and wait do I? Mine is photographed and supposedly emailed to me but Ryan hasn't got round to that bit yet and has gone out so will be lunchtime ish for mine. Doesn't matter by the sounds of things!! You'll be too busy to look.
I have got all inspired again and have almost got 1 quilt cut out and found another one for scraps - 1 1/2" strips and it looks great so I went to Big W today and got some flatish containers to put the cut ones intoseparately so I am ready to go. My Christmas pressies for the goirls is probably close to 3/4 done and what is wrong with me??? And to top it off Ian is cooking tea? Does it get any better than this?

Tomorrow

WE have to midnight...right?
And I may need every minute! I have a fine collection of bits thus far......except I cant find the dark brown ..it must be here somewhere.
Cant wait to see yours tho......

Where has October gone?

Can someone tell me where October has gone - did I sleep too long and miss most of it? It is already the 19th. My saving grace is that there is 31 days in October!!!! I know exactly what I'm doing so that isn't a problem but the usual thing of actually getting started is the problem. But I know I must!!! Maybe tonight I will start as I have finished Angeleigh's quilt and some Christmas stars that I only need to paint. Tonight is the night!!!!!

October topic

The topic for October is memories. Think carefully!!!

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

oh

And the new topic is??????

well done

Great work Linda....nice one.
Greg has given up! So I am unsure when mine will appear....Can you put a phone picture into an email? We have been reading manuals but cant seem to crack it!
Maybe next week or even while we are away if we get the laptop working again!
Cheers Bev
Do you want a description?
Just pointing out my 2c material from spotlight is used for the background!!!! Could have been my frugal quilt. LOL

My History

This is my history. It turned out quite well (I thought). The picture is of Ian's Dad who was in WW2 and was wounded twice - hence the telegrams and the newspaper clip. I used things I hadn't used before - the t-shirt transferand printing directly onto fabric. The book I got from the library really gave me heaps of ideas - lots more to try out.

calms

not clams

waaah

The camera is playing up.....it seems that my puter meltdown last week may have been the result of Greg using an infected thumbdrive(?) thingee to transfer photos from his laptop .So when he tried to use that thingee it has shutdown his laptop.....he isnt very happy......But at least Liezza who we had blamed (not too her..she is only 6) is off the hook!

Still there is time and when Greg clams down and thinks..I think he will figure it out! Otherwise I will be late like Jan!

History

I have made a picture of Clio, the muse of history. She was the daughter of Zeus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clio_(muse)) and was one of nine goddesses. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muse)

I think I found her on the first of Sept and did a bit of research on muses and greek mythology in general.Brandon was quite helpful and really we are learning together about this history.

I found the original image...which I think is a sculpture and then using prismacolour pencils and threads sewed a sort of likeness...hoping all the while that the photo would look better than the quilt! Actually I have enjoyed the process and intend to do more..it was fun.

Have a great day....hope the next months theme leads to more learning!

Bev

phew

I finished ...well it is done but this time I was trying a new technique so its rather basic.I will post tomorrow since wednesday the family and I are heading to the farm for a week.
cheers Bev

Hi Ladies
I'm going to have to be late with my quilt again this month, I am going away tomorrow for a holiday. I will get home on the 7th October
I'm taking my girls to the South Island for a ten day road trip, should be great. Then when I came home I will have four days before I go back to work so I will have time then to finish my quilt AND find out the word for October then as well and maybe even get going on that quilt too!!
Dreams are free!
Have a great month and look forward to seeing your quilts when I get back.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

a wierd idea

http://www.thepotters.com/puzzles/women.html

September's word

And the word for September is 'history'....mmm, that can mean many things can't it?!

Finally!!

Here is August's quilt. My 'frugal' is I have used bits left over from other quilts, I had the blue triangular corner pieces left over from a quilt and the light apricot squares were from another quilt, the rest of the materials, wadding and back were scraps from my stash, and I didn't quilt it... there was a saving of cotton!!
I love both of your quilts and I am constantly amazed at how differently we think!!
I had finished my 'Music' quilt but am not happy with the result so will put it on here when I have fixed up what I don't like!

can you see Michele the Queen and Charles?

My Frugal

My quilt kind of lost its way.I was looking for frugal things to counteract the recession......(Thinking how recession today means no new plasma or o/s holiday where recession years ago meant no dinner???) Somehow I found a new article about the queens vege garden at Buck house and another on Michele Obama starting vege gardens at schools in washington. And then Liezza's class started a vege garden.
Also in WW2 vege gardens were encouraged via posters as a way to keep the population healthy.
So somehow I ended up with this.Oh and I used quilt as you go and joined the blocks on the front using old pieces of bindings...to try the method really.
And the back and indeed all the bits and pieces came from the sewing room...nothing was purchased!

Frugal

This was a great word - conjures up lots of ideas and then I had a light bulb moment when I saw the selvedges that I had collected (and been given , thanks Bev) . They were they grounds for my quilt - frugal is using something you have for some other use. The back of my quilt was Ryan's old shirt - hence the buttons and pocket are still on it. The wadding was some I already had and the binding was a wider selvedge. Quite pleased with this one and it does lookbetter in real life!!

Friday, August 21, 2009

Jan must be working double time so she can post 2 quilts!!! Aye???

oh no

Has anyone seen the DATE!
Where has those three weeks gone........

Linda

Thats so nice Linda....and the quilting looks fine. This is a great way to try new things and so easy when its only 12 inch size.
Well done..Bring it on wed for all the goirls to see!

My music

I thought and thought. Googled and googled again. Wikki'd and widdi'd. And it really didn't help!!! My quilt is all te different sorts of music - represented by cd's. I give up on my family though, none of them could see them as cd's. I'm adopting Ryan's friend - he knew what they were!!!! It was a change as you go quilt. The cd's started as squares. Cut them to circles, which looked a bit bare so put the buttons on. then quilted each circle - which wasn't easy with the buttons in the middle. I should have quilted them first and it would have been easier. At least I'm trying things and it is way easier on little quilts!!

August Topic

My word is Frugal.
Best wishes
Bev

Music....

Here is mine. When I looked up Wikipedia I was struck by the picture they use to represent music....I really liked it.Also I really want to try celtic/bias work and intended to copy the picture using bias tapes.I have the clover maker thingee and spent a frustrating afternoon teaching myself how to use it only to come to the realisation that (at least for me) a 12 in square is just too small. So I started trying to work it in threads of various types.

Then I pursued another idea completely for a while and went back to this. The outlines are done first in wool and the then threads mostly shiny rayons are added.

I bound the quilt in white...in a sort of tribute to Michael Jackson.(Black or White)

Have a nice evening...

Mines done!!!!!

Greg is just getting the photos organized.....I am excited coz it looks BETTER or at least passable on camera...and rubbish in real life!!!
Do I wait till sunday or go now????
Off to find next months topic....just cant think of one at all.

Groveling apology

I need to ask for an extension until Sunday.
Many apologies to you both, we are very short of Registered Nurses at work so I have been working extra shifts and really just haven't had time to get my quilt finished.
Can we make a new rule that we can ask for an extension ......can do this only once...maybe, possibly??
I'm grasping at straws here!!
Let me know what the majority decides!
This sounds like an excuse - BUT my quilt is done and ready to be photographed but need Ryan as the computer has gone and got itself a virus - Mr notme has been downloading stuff and got it infected so I need Ryan to take a photo with his phone and put it onto his laptop. The world is conspiring against me!!!!!

Thursday, July 30, 2009

tomorrow

Mine will be late ....very late.I will need to wait till Greg gets home to get the photo up....and will be up late making the QUILT!
sigh

Counting Down

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

hi

Okay my second idea is almost done but.....well it didnt quite end up as I wish....and now a completely different idea is filling my head!!!! I think its better to wait till the last coupla days hehehehe
I love school teachers! Its so quiet here today...ah bliss

Sunday, July 19, 2009

I've been thinking of what I am going to do for my quilt and have it planned out in my head and going to draw it up tonight to see if it works like I want. I do like your idea of our own tune. Isaiha's does suit him!! I won't be looking at people without thinking of what their 'song' is. Great thoughts. I was planning to do some quilt today but we had Christmas in July last night and it ended up late and now I am old I needed a nana nap this afternoon. I was reading my book but kept dropping it!! 'Rain drops keep falling on my head' came to mind at soccer today! See not just people have songs - situations too. Life is just one big song!!!!!!!

hello

Bit despondant today..Brandon wont work on his schoolstuff and my first try at the music quilt didnt work! I hope the rest of you are working away...I expect I shall be finishing late as usual.
On another tack....Brandon and I noted that Darth Vader always has music in his scenes ( I know you are humming it..Dah dah dah -dah) and we have been having fun with the idea of a band following people around ...Isaiahs music is *It isnt fair,??? and I want my share....* (Dont know the song name but I can hum it!
Liezzas would have to be Hannah Montana at the moment....pumping up the party now!
I am searching for song with nanna (And the whine) in every line!!!
Imagine always having to wait till the music ended till you could speak!Might save some embarressing outbursts!
What a strange post!
Off to replan my ideas.....

Beginnings quilts

Thank you for letting me check out your quilts.
I love the thread you used on yours Bev, it really adds a different dimension doesn't it.
They look great all lined up together..amazing to think they were all inspired by the same w0rd.
I will take a photo of all three quilts together and see if I can get it on this site.

Aren't we so clever!!!

I must say I thought all July's quilts were fantastic!!
And I was worried about the word I chose but I needn't have at all!!
Music...not much coming to me yet but I'm still convinced I can do this before the 31st and maybe even have time to spare!!! Now that's getting carried away...

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

well done us!

Three different results!
Three very different quilts...and so interesting! wow.
Cant wait till the next one.hehehe and we are all starting early right? right yeah right!

Perhaps I am stronger than I think - Thomas Merton, That made me started to think about how you can see the strength inside people. Of course you can't see the strength and that leads onto where does your inner strength come from - head or heart?? My quilt does look a bit simple (doesn't help when I didn't start until Sunday night) but it was hard to put onto quilt what was in my head!!!
Roll on next month - I have got the word ready and got a head start (all of a day) so get up early and see what July brings.

Strength - In your head or heart?

Ta Da!!

Here it is!!.

When I thought of the word strength 'sisterhood' is the word that came to mind!

When you are sad, happy, in need of a sympathetic ear, someone to share good or bad or sad news with it's usually a friend, sister, mother we share it with.

My quilt background is crazy patchwork with athell colours of emotion included. Also from the bottom left hand corner where life starts to the top right hand corner to where life ends are materials that have the colours of stages of life in them. And across all this are four 'sisters' who are there throughout your life to encourage, listen, laugh/cry with you...all the time giving you the strength you may not have in yourself to face the challenges of life. And yes you are right, I haven't done the binding yet.

But...I am rapt with this quilt, I'm tempted to hang it on the wall of my office!!

Sorry to keep you waiting

Hi there. Wow Bev what a beautiful little quilt! I am amazed at how differently we interpret the word...isn't that a great thing, imagine if we all made the same thing!! I am just waiting for my camera battery to charge(thanks kids) then I will get my picture on here.

closer

the front

I began by trying to make a list of the strongest things......and they kept coming back to triangles which I think I recall being the strongest shape...so I looked for a pattern using triangles.I have always wanted to make a kliedescope quilt so I did. Although the photos look bluish it is actally all greys....because I wanted to add in Diamonds (treasure) which was the strongest element when I went to school....now of course there are harder things! I looked at the cutting of diamonds..often in triangle shapes and intended to quilt a cutting diagram over the top. Unfortunately my idea was greater than my skill so I have settled for diamond shapes in metallic thread....I hope the photos will show the sparkle!

Cheers.....

The back

The verse on the back is
A Faithful Friend is a strong defense and he that hath found one hath found a Treasure.

Also last Sunday my first great-nephew was Christened and the bishop(FEMALE!) talked about strength...2Timothy 4;16-18 and I have noted that event on the quilt.
And the backing fabric is all triangles....which also are the basis of the front!

strength

heres a little taster!
The back! And the sign that I have yet to master quilt photography

chill

Stop and breathe deeply..I said 3/4 of the TOP ...I wanted to handquilt it and still have to sandwich etc etc.No stress...we still have another day and a bit.Its meant to be fun! And we both know we work better under pressure.....
I nearly had a heart attack when I read your post Bev saying you were 3/4 finished. I want to cry. I"M STARTED!!! but that is it. Had Steph for the weekend and it goes so quick, Kate and I went to the netball today at challenge stadium and that was about it.

oh my

This is sort of fun..... I am about 3/4 finished the top of mine and all of a sudden it is working....well I thought so but the boys cant see it. But I am happy.

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

it is reveal day next Tuesday

It doesn't seem like a whole month has gone past - well almost. And like every month I say i'll start earlier next month and this time of the month comes and i'm still not further ahead than last month!!! But a break through happened today - I know what I am doing and how (which is the important part), and now just have to do it. And only have a few days to do it and at the same time think of a topic for next month!! It is all happening

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

still nothing

I still cant start....my mind is mush.
Today was going to be a sewing day..have the machine the fabric and the space....but its just not happening..yet. I watched a movie..Chocolat ...first Jonny Depp I liked! I ve threaded the machine and reread my notes and looked at the fabrics. Now I decided to have lunch and START in half an hour.
God give me STRENGTH!
Bev...I need a kick up the you=know=where!

Sunday, June 14, 2009

Well another week gone by, 1 week closer to the reveal and I haven't got much idea yet. Long hard thinking ahead for me!!!!

Saturday, June 6, 2009

Would you like to see our quilts in real? We could send them over with Ryan. Bev's quilting looks way better in real life. When we went to the quilt show she brought some 'Razzle, Dazzle and Shine' (3 different sorts of threads) it looks so good. It is thicker - like crochet cotton - and you wind it onto the bobbin and quilt from the back side. Very impressed. Of course I didn't buy any threads!!

Right...the word for June is.......strength.
No time like the present to start thinking!!
Reveal.....30th June.
Have fun!!

Finally!!

Sorry..have been fighting with an uncooperative computer for the last couple of hours!!!!frustrating!

Anyway, my quilt... the colour bands go from dark to light representing that most beginnings emerge from darkness, whether that be morning, birth, dark times....then there is the koru shape, this represents the new bud of a fern unfolding... I am pleased with my first effort but it didn't turn out exactly as I had envisioned and I changed a few things as I went on but that was quite interesting in itself.. having to think of new things when I thought I already had it sorted!!

This is my offering. It also didnt exactly end up as I hoped...The safety house was meant to be glowing..sort of offering the promise of a new beginning. Also photographing quilts is harder than I realised..it looks different in person! Anyway the idea came from snippets on the news and in my life to do with fostering. There have been several shocking and awful and sad cases of child neglect lately..and DCP over here have released amazing stats about the increasing nos of children being removed from their families plus I have been to some meetings lately and heard some tales.

So the child is black with quilting in coloured thread just waiting to shine under new care...the background is meant to head from darkness to light....(and not be the beach as Liezza said it was! ) And the case is his past that he takes to his new Beginning!

At then beginning of my day...

It was a hard theme to do in one way as everything starts from nothing and that isn't very interesting. I was looking in my stash for something else and came across the cup and my mind began to tick!!! It didn't come out like I wanted - it should look like the cup is sitting on the bench infront of the window, with the sun rising. I impressed myself with the quilting on the sun - you know how much I don't like quilting - maybe because it is a small quilt it is easier to handle. I'm looking forward to seeing your quilts goirls.

the idea I didnt use

The beginnings of things, of a world especially, is necessarily vague, tangled, chaotic, and exceedingly disturbing. ~ Kate Chopin

I'm ready - finally

I have no plan - just need to finish one edge of binding and I'm done. It is amazing how much one can do in a night if push really becomes shove. Post when you are ready/have time.

Are we ready!!!!

How long now Linda! Is there a plan for tomorrow or do we just post when we are ready?

Monday, May 25, 2009

You are so on to technology Bev!! I'm still at the 'I should have done more before now' stage. Can we turn the clock back? Like maybe before Christmas would be nice (but of course the goirls Christmas stuff done!!). I know exactly what I am doing, done part of it but with starting my new job (and working more hours), not being able to sew it on Wednesday and the last 2 weekends having kids and working the Saturday, my month seems to have disappeared!!! If someone knows where it has gone, please let me know.

Saturday, May 23, 2009

Wow ..now I can add a photo!!! Just need to make something and photo it....

My Star...Liezza...doing what she likes!

How long!#@$!

Hello...I an starting to panic a bit..made a fine start but the inspiration has sort of disipated. Maybe when the Carlton footy game starts I will be able to sew up a storm (Hopefully in excitement not frustration!..Go Blues)
Hasnt this month flown.

Off to the quilt show

Bev and I are off to the quilt show in Perth tomorrow. Of course we are only going to look, listen and learn lots of new things. We'll come back all re-energized and then realise that is another day closer to the big reveal!!!!! Of well what can we do? We'll force ourselves to suck it all in and come home and sew all night - not!!!

huh???

Being born in a duck yard does not matter, if only you are hatched from a swan's egg. ~ Hans Christian Andersen

Beginnings

Beginning is not only a kind of action. It is also a frame of mind, a kind of work, an attitude, a consciousness. ~ Edward Said
The only joy in the world is to begin. ~ Cesare Pavese

Beginings reveal

For our first reveal - of 'Beginnings' - the end of this month, 31st May. Is that too early for you all? And is a 12" x 12" suitable or would a postcard size be a good start seeing we don't have a full month. Perhaps the size is optional.
Okay...since This is the first project and since this is the first blog how about we consider *beginnings*. Now Linda can decide when the reveal date shall be and what exactly we are making?
Cheers

I'm so pleased

I'm so excited to have finally begun. Now the hard part starts - doing the quilts. But first we have to pick a theme for our quilts. Are we going to take turns to pick a theme? How long do we have to do it? Questions? Perhaps we'll just sort things out as we go. Very gungho - pioneers you could say - Not!!! We just want to step outside our comfort zones and explore the other side (sound arty enough?). I pick Bev to decide our first theme. Over to her
